China Bans Unverified Power Banks on Flights Amid Lithium Battery Fire Risks

Beijing – In a move to enhance air travel safety, Chinese aviation authorities have officially banned passengers from carrying unverified power banks on domestic flights. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced that only power banks certified under the China Compulsory Certification (3C) system will be permitted onboard.

Fire Incidents Spark New Regulations

This urgent policy change follows multiple fire incidents linked to lithium-ion batteries in portable charging devices. The CAAC stated that any power bank with unclear labeling, missing certification, or recalled models will be prohibited during air travel.

Major Product Recalls Prompt Safety Crackdown

Two high-profile product recalls intensified regulatory scrutiny:

  1. Romas, a Shenzhen-based electronics manufacturer, was ordered to recall over 492,000 units of its 20,000 mAh power banks after several Chinese universities reported fire hazards. The affected devices were produced between June 2023 and July 2024.

  2. Global tech brand Anker Innovations also recalled 710,000 power banks globally on June 20, due to risks tied to battery cell defects that could potentially cause thermal runaway or fires.

Focus on Passenger Safety and Product Integrity

The CAAC emphasized that these restrictions aim to reduce the risk of in-flight fire emergencies, especially as lithium battery overheating incidents are rising globally. Travelers are urged to check their power bank certifications before packing, and avoid carrying off-brand or uncertified devices.
